Anime Pilgrimage Spots In and Around Tokyo

Tokyo and its neighbouring prefectures are one of the easiest places to begin an anime pilgrimage. Many well-known locations are reachable on regular trains within an hour or two of central Tokyo, which makes them ideal for day trips. Below are some of the most popular, along with the nearest stations. Always check current access and opening details before you go.
Yotsuya: the famous staircase
A long stone staircase beside Suga Shrine in Yotsuya, central Tokyo, became internationally famous after appearing in a hit anime film. It is an ordinary neighbourhood stairway, so visit quietly and be mindful of residents and other pedestrians. Nearest stations: Yotsuya or Yotsuya-sanchome.
Kamakura & Enoshima: the seaside crossing
The Enoshima Electric Railway ("Enoden") runs along the coast south of Tokyo, and the railway crossing near Kamakurakoukou-mae Station is one of the most photographed anime-related spots in the country, recognised by basketball fans worldwide. The whole Kamakura–Enoshima area makes a rewarding day trip with temples, beaches and the retro Enoden line itself. Access: around an hour from Tokyo by JR to Kamakura, then the Enoden.
Saitama: where the boom began
Washinomiya Shrine in Kuki, Saitama, is often credited as a starting point of modern anime tourism after a popular series in the 2000s. The shrine still welcomes fans and hosts events, and its ema boards are covered in fan illustrations. Access: Washinomiya Station on the Tobu line.
Chichibu: a small-town setting
The town of Chichibu in western Saitama is the setting of a much-loved emotional drama series, and several real spots around town appear in the show. It is a scenic area in the mountains, good for combining a pilgrimage with nature. Access: roughly two hours from central Tokyo by train.
Akihabara: the fan culture hub
Not a "scene" location, but no anime trip to Tokyo is complete without Akihabara — the district packed with anime shops, figure stores, arcades and themed cafés. It's the best place to pick up merchandise and feel the wider culture. Access: Akihabara Station.
